Pierce Me

January 12th, 2007

I got a second cartilage piercing for my left ear. It didn’t hurt; they froze the ear and pricked it with a needle, and voila! I went with Iris to La Lobe, which is the same piercing parlor we went to for our first piercings. I find it entertaining cause it’s a piercing parlor run by middle-aged women with bad dye-jobs. But they’re very nice and the place is clean and comfortable so I like it. They don’t use piercing guns, which poke bigger holes (more infections) and are more likely to shatter your cartilage.

Anyway, I think the piercing looks nice. It’s true though, that piercings can be addictive, but I feel like if I had any more I’d have more difficultly looking professional. Effing b-school.

Iris is going back to school tomorrow so we did a sushi dinner last night, complete with our home-made sushi rice and Japanese ginger dressing for our salad. I’d give the recipes except it didn’t really turn out that great, haha. Chalk one up for learning experiences, right?

Wheel e-mails about work have already begun to pile up and I have two book reviews to write. So, that’s what I’ll be working on until school starts (theoretically) until the Wheel eats me alive completely.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that came out on Thursday to hang out. It was good seeing people again, even if some of you I only caught on the way in and out of a dark theater, haha. I’m sorry you guys had to buy tickets to see thirty minutes of a movie (The Good Shepherd was great, by the way, even if it made your soul die just a little). I’m surprised/proud/relieved at how together everyone seems now. Man, I remember what a wreck we all were after freshman year, haha.

Anyway, Karen turned 21 as of today. We had a late dinner at Bennigan’s so she could order a drink when it struck twelve. So, happy birthday to her. I finally, finally, finally got to hang with Amy, Daniel and Howie this week. Yay! And we saw Gloria, Yelena, Julie … point being, it’s been really great hearing about how everyone’s doing at college. Ron’s graduating this year, which is just weird.

After the um…”IB INVASION” as I chose to name it because I am a dork, we went to Taco Diner. Contrary to what the name might suggest (clearly a poor marketing decision), it’s actually a nice restaurant. I had an overpriced Tilapia fillet which led to the name of this post. Well, that and all the people I won’t see for another year or two (boo). Kasey left this past weekend and Thomas is leaving tomorrow. Sigh. So long, all.

I should preface this by saying that the grapes have nothing to do with the magic tricks. I just don’t want to disappoint anyone hoping for some intricate blend of the two topics.

Anyway, I watched The Prestige and the The Illusionist at the dollar theater recently. (Oh! The dollar theater, better known as Movies 10, is no longer the dollar theater but rather the dollar-fifty theater. I’m distraught, but that’s another subject for later.) The Illusionist is a movie about magicians and the art of creating an illusion. The Prestige is what The Illusionist would have been if it were a good movie. The Prestige, great. The Illusionist, not so much. It was disappointing because I really like Ed Norton (The Illusionist, American History X). But The Prestige was clearly conceived, had solid acting throughout, had character development, and all that other good stuff (plus Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman). The Illusionist was badly edited, executed its ending poorly, and the production quality was just worse overall. My point is, if you’re trying to choose between the two, go with The Prestige. It’s much better.

But I mentioned something about grapes. So here goes, two more recipes for the cookbook. The first is for a full on Waldorf salad (which is basically an enhanced fruit salad), which my sister and I made while I was in Austin. The second is just a snack, Spiced Grapes, which is like a watered down version of the first item.

Classic Waldorf Salad

Ingredients

  • Two (2) cups of apples, diced (roughly 3 or 4 apples, Gala or Fuji apples are best so skip those standard “Red Delicious” apples)
  • One (1) cup of seedless grapes, halved
  • Half (1/2) cup of celery, chopped
  • Quarter (1/4) cup of walnuts or pecans
  • Quarter (1/4) cup of raisins or dried cranberries
  • Quarter (1/4) cup of mayonnaise
  • 8 oz. of low-fat vanilla yogurt
  • One (1) tablespoon of fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • Half (1/2) tablespoon of ground cinnamon

Instructions

Most of these items, you can add or subtract as you see fit. Basically, just combine the mayonnaise and yogurt in a bowl. Bake the walnuts/pecans until golden brown (usually 5-10 minutes, just put them on some foil on a baking pan) in the oven. After that, just combine and fold the ingredients in. Voila!

The Waldorf makes for a very easy, but still delicious and relatively healthy side dish. However, if that’s still too complicated for you, Spiced Grapes are a good alternative (assuming you don’t have some intense hatred of grapes). Just wash some grapes, plop on some vanilla yogurt, add a dash of cinnamon and enjoy.

Boys and Girls at Work

January 4th, 2007

So I came across Ron and Sarah – family friends I’ve known for years and years (Ron still whines about the time I put gum in his hair, sheesh) – twice in the past few days, which is odd cause I haven’t seem them in a few years. Anyway, Sarah now works in the marketing department at Google, how amazing is that? And Flora, her cousin, is apparently working at The New York Times (wow). Ask any other journalism major and they will agree with me: Flora is the shit.

Yet, while those are impressive places to work, the dork/nerd in me feels that the best job title goes to Marie’s boyfriend, who works at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ryan’s the person that trains people to get data for the CPI (Consumer Price Index, remember this, guys?). His official job title? Economist.

Oh My, It’s 2007

January 2nd, 2007

My New Year’s post is late because I’ve been busy finishing this site, catching up on reading, and meeting up with IB nerds. I rang in the new year playing Scrabble, ha! I won, so I feel that bodes well for the upcoming year. I’ve actually been playing a lot of Scrabble and fooseball and hanging out at Java lately, which makes me feel like I’ve regressed back to high school. Hmm.

Anyhow, Austin was fun until my sister got sick. I spent the week watching TV and eating a lot of good food. My sister works at a nice Japanese restaurant so we had a couple yummy meals from there.

Back to New Year’s, Businessweek is doing a New Year’s Resolution (screenshot) slideshow under their undergraduate slideshow section. I look a little goofy as usual, but I’m on there (screenshot) because a friend of mine interned there, haha. (This link will probably be dead in a week or two unfortunately.) The quote they have listed from me is such a lie. I have no intention of actually expending that much energy.

I’d like to end with a note Thomas and I crafted to Khang and Jules, re: crushing scrabble defeat –

Dear Losers,
Perdieron otra vez, como siempre.

Love,
Los Ganadores.

Nothing says holiday cheer like merciless mocking. Happy New Year, all!
