Summer Cleaning

May 25th, 2008

It’s that time of the year again … yes, that’s right, I spent yesterday reformatting my computer! Now it’s all happy and empty, ready to be filled with endless downloads. I also came up with a conclusion: I think I might actually like Windows Vista. Seeing as how I know a horde of Apple-crazed fanboys, I realize this is a somewhat dangerous thing to say. However, I think Vista is really being over-vilified at this point.

Alright, so, when I first got my new computer (the inverter on my previous Pavillion broke), I was really psyched until I found out that despite having nice specs, I was actually worse off in terms of what I could do. There was the file-transfer bug plus compatibility issues plus general unfamiliarity plus that POS user account control. I basically couldn’t play any of the games that I’d gotten this computer in order to play and three out of the seven programs I use most often weren’t compatible. Color me peeved.

Needless to say, being told it was “more secure” did not seem like much of a plus at all. Anyway, it took me at least a week to — begrudingly — configure everything to get to some point where I was able to do what I needed to do.

Flash forward a year: I haven’t noticed anymore bugs, though I won’t vouch for anyone else. Now, before, reformatting on XP was an incredibly arduous process requiring hours of your somewhat undivided attention. On Vista, it took about 20 minutes and I was up and running after about half an hour of installing drivers and updates. Now, I’m not suggesting that people should immediately pick up a copy of Vista because gee, at least it installs quickly, but I really think there’s a number of not insignificant improvements that genuinely make it easier to use. I was pleased to find that all my precious programs are now finally Vista-compatible. w00t. Additionally, when I’m not busy cussing out my computer for compatibility issues, I actually find the interface pretty attractive.

I can completely understand people who were pissed off when it was released and even six months after that. However, honestly, can anyone tell me what’s currently so terrible about Vista? (Preferably someone who has actually used it as opposed to a Mac fanatic that has never spent more that 5 minutes on Vista.) UAC can be turned off in about four clicks after the system is installed, so no that doesn’t count.

Anyway, maybe I just really dislike Apple, I dunno. I just think people are taking one look, saying OMG IT’S NOT THE SAME!! and deciding they hate it. Then again, I’m also the only person that likes Office 2007, haha. Change is good! Go with it, people!

Lazy, Hazy Summer Days

May 21st, 2008

The eye of the storm. Life has ground (grinded? I don’t think that’s a word) to a brief and much needed halt as I wait to move northward. Graduation was hectic, as one would imagine, but honestly I’m surprised how quickly it ended. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to a lot of people, but I did get some pretty solid goodbyes in and that was good. I actually think the last person I talked to (other than my roommates) was this random guy named Jimmy, and we talked about how one becomes a man (him, not me — otherwise it would require talking about awkward surgical procedures. <– bad joke). Not how I imagined my time at Emory to end, but somehow appropriate.

Anyway, the wedding was really nice and the whole thing took place at a really romantic beach-side resort in San Diego, CA. They are a pretty chill couple so the wedding took out a lot of the unnecessary pomp and circumstance that tends to make them really tedious; the whole ceremony took all of — 15 minutes? Yeah, shortest wedding ever, or so I’m told. Just walking up the aisle, short sand ceremony, him: I do, her: I do, kiss kiss, the end. It was fun to see all the family again though it was a bit unbalanced (her side: 42 people, his side: 7, haha). Overall, it was a really well-planned wedding, I think.

Well, I’m back at home now catching up on some reading. I’ve been trying to get through Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, but I’m finding that it’s just a little bit much with all the spirituality and stuff. I mean, the parts when she is on her bathroom floor writing and telling herself it is the voice of God pouring forth from her hand (and this happens multiple times) — yeah, color me skeptical. Sorry.

I’ve had better luck with a collection of short stories by David Sedaris – I guess they’re technically essays, which is useful to know if you’re ever looking for his stuff in a bookstore – which I switch to each time the Gilbert book starts to get on my nerves. I’m still determined to finish it, but it’s definitely testing my willpower.

Finally, los videojuegos. I beat Fable yesterday. I actually really liked it. My sister’s friend Marc says it’s too short, but I thought it was a good length if you do all the optional sidequests (which I am wont to do) and take the time to find everything and try out different options. Lessee, I’ve also played The Movies (gets very boring around after 5 hours or so), the Sims Castaway Stories (waste of time, non-fun, WAY TOO LINEAR, gets boring after the first hour and a half), and I’m about three-quarters of the way through Neverwinter Nights. Neverwinter Nights is very long. I don’t know how long I’ve been playing but I’ve been trying to get through this game since prior to finals. Looong. But quite good. I think more hardcore gam3rz would appreciate the length/depth more than I do.

I’m officially done with class (though I should be working on a 10-page paper right…now). I think my apartment crisis (a.k.a. where to live in Manhattan) should be over soon. I’ve been looking at a place to share in Herald Towers. It’s got an H&M across from the building and a Pinkberry nearby, both very good things in my book.

Anyway, I’m sick right now — boo — but it’s given me an excuse not to do homework. Which is not great, I know. But anyway, I’ll re-focus this weekend and start hitting the books. For now, I have a legitimate excuse to bum around a little until my poor, ailing health improves. Ha. No, but seriously, I feel like shit so I’m kind of useless anyway.

All in all, I think the next few weeks should be fun, minus the finals. Viv, my cousin, is getting married to Dave the surfer. I’ve got graduation activities (visiting the aquarium, Senior block party, Senior soiree, Senior reception, etc.) up the wahzoo. Plus, I’m actually really excited to start work soon. I think the people I’m working with are going to be great, and that it’ll be fun. I mean, I’ve never really had a job I didn’t like, so hopefully this will be the same.

Well, this post didn’t really have a point. I’ve been trying to write, like, thought-out posts instead of “here’s what happened today” posts, but I felt like this blog was getting increasingly pretentious. So yeah.
