This is version two of the blog, which currently contains 110 published posts. To some extent, this blog represents the creative excesses of a design enthusiast who is somewhere in the process of applying to grad school, working at a law firm and resides in the Financial District of New York City.

So, right now, I’m sitting in a room, surrounded by boxes and packaging tape and hangers and plastic bags and…yeech. It’s moving time and it sucks. The most obnoxious thing is that damn painting, haha. I love it, partially because of the sentimental value it holds for me, but it doesn’t fit any box, it’s oversized and it’s just a pain to move/ship. I’ve fashioned something that resembles a box for it, but I’m worried that UPS will reject it when they see it cause it looks like a hot fucking mess — no joke. It would be funny if it weren’t so tragic.

But anyway. I don’t have much to report — things are proceeding relatively smoothly, I think. I have seven days left in the city, and mostly I just want to finish packing and I’d ideally like to see everyone at least one more time before I go, but obviously there’s time constraints and I have a lot of administrative stuff to deal with, so I’ll do the best I can. Plus I’m still working as of right now. Nate’s in town this weekend, so I really hope we get to see him at some point, but we’ll see. It sucks that I was sort of sick last weekend and had to cancel on people, so I’m a little worried since I’m actually running out of time. Eeek.

I thought I would feel lonely and depressed the month before law school starts since I thought it would be a lot of nothing, but I’m actually getting really excited. Ali is living in Chicago now, my parents will be flying in when I first move and then Kendra will be visiting, then my sister, and then Dan and maybe Rita at some point that month — plus I realize that I actually know quite a few random people in Chicago already. So, yeah, I’m looking forward to it.

I’ve given up reading stuff I actually like in order to spend time getting through The Bramble Bush and Getting to Maybe (which I’m also outlining) in order to prepare for school. It’s probably overkill, but considering how much the sticker price is for law school (without scholarship money, around $225,000 by the end of three years if you include interest that’s accumulating) — well, I figure I should do my best. Obviously, my loans will be nowhere near there, but even still, it’s a daunting figure to consider.

I have mixed feelings about leaving New York. I’m sad, but hopeful. It’s weird how people come in and out of your life. I remember a few months ago (I can’t remember who this conversation was with), but we were talking about the saying “a rolling stone gathers no moss” and whether that had a positive or negative connotation. On one hand, it’s referring to escaping responsibilities, on the other it’s about preventing stagnation. Wikipedia seems to think it could go either way…which I find annoying in a way — I keep wondering if I should make an active effort to stop moving around and changing career paths, and it would be easier if there were a clear answer.

I’ve said before, I hate the process of saying goodbye to things and people, of reformulating life plans, of trying to create social and support systems from scratch. At the same time, I’ve gotten to cross paths with a diverse swath of people and lifestyles, which is important, I think. Anyway, it’s just something that’s been on my mind. Maybe I’m just adverse to change, but I generally feel like I’m happy and positive about life, but still not entirely satisfied. Like, I don’t think I’ve ever felt entirely content.

Well, whatever. In a completely different tangent, I’ve finally gotten back to finishing up this blog which has been under construction for almost six months, haha. I really should just recode everything cause it was a mess the last time I did it — I didn’t take time to read up on the changes going from WordPress 2.x to 3 and I actually migrated the entire blog to a completely new installation and directory which complicated things. But, depending on how busy the next few weeks are, it may or may not ever happen. Oh well.

Quick Update

May 2nd, 2007

I just updated from WordPress 2.0.5 to 2.1.3. While most things seem to be working correctly, a few of the plugins seem to be spitting out funny results. I’ll fix these things as soon as my exam tomorrow morning is over. Ciao!

UPDATE: Okay, everything should be fixed. Props to Brian for giving me a heads-up on the coding error.

Miscellany

May 1st, 2007

The last post was depressing, so in order to prevent ending on that note, here’s a shoutout to Davemo, who has started his blog. North American Scum. Yay, go Dave.

Also, I installed a new plug-in so I can have a cool audio player for when I want to post mp3s. Here are two examples.

Stay – You and I are Fools
This first song I’ve been listening to over and over to try to translate it and practice my Korean-learning abilities. It’s from the Korean drama Goong.

Jang Pil Soon – 10 Month
This movie was depressing as all hell, but I rather liked the soundtrack. It reminded me of what the music would be for one of those indie films if it were in English, haha.

The Plug Plugin

March 22nd, 2007

Quick update, I installed a new plugin that spits out a list of people who commented on a post and links their name back to their respective websites. It’s a comment-whoring move to let others plug their sites on yours, but oh well, seeing as how most of the traffic into my site comes in that form anyway.

If you want to do the same thing (see the “complements of” after each post on the index page?), you can download it from that site.

I made a few quick changes to the code, though. I wanted commas in-between each person, so I needed to have the script put in a comma after every entry other than the last one. In order to do so, after the script files all comment authors and URLs into the array $commenters, I assigned a new variable $count the integer one and got a count of the array. In code form:

$result = count($commenters);
$count = 1;

(Hint: $count starts at 1 to account for the fact that I don’t want a comma after the last commenter) After that, I concatenated a comma onto the string after each commenter and added one to the count, other than the last one, by adding the following line:

The Container Store

February 10th, 2007

For a long time, there was a Container Store ad that would play on 106.1 KISS FM in Dallas, Texas that had circus music in the background. Then, there’s be a pause and the voice would say “I see we have more time” — and then the ad would start up again.

That phrase is kind of what I feel like right now. After deciding to ditch j-school, as corny as it sounds, it feels like a world of possibility is open to me again. For starters, I finally had time to finish part one of the WordPress Plugin Tutorial that I started working on over winter break. I plan to have two more parts to it, but hopefully someone will find what’s there useful.

I’ve been having lunch – and we have, like, hour-long lunches – at least twice a week with my roommates. And I’ve checked out a bunch of restaurants as of late, which is great. I discovered that I rather like Indian food. We’ve ordered from Udipi (South Indian food) a couple times, but one of the sales reps told me I should check out Mirch Masala (North Indian food). Apparently, North Indian food has more meat and South Indian food is largely vegetarian, so if you like meat then North Indian is the cuisine for you. (The reason for this is because South India has more vegetation due to its proximity to water, whereas North India relies more on livestock.) Anyway, he was right and it was delicious, though the service was mediocre.

The do, however, give little keychains with to every customer, which I thought was kind of cute.

But anyway, we also had the Top Reps dinner on Wednesday, where we take the three reps who have made the highest amount of sales out with all the business managers to a fancy dinner. We went to a restaurant that we have trade with called Sala. I ordered crab enchiladas and duck tapas, both of which were pretty good, but not great. The restaurant definitely chose style over substance. However, I had a lot of fun and it was a great night. I also think it really “recharged” the reps to get back in the office and sell some more. Pictures of the my food and the restaurant below.

Meanwhile, I have rediscovered Tetrinet, which is, I suppose, a kickback to my high school days. We spent an excessive amount of time playing Tetrinet in class after exams were over during senior year. It’s not the healthiest of habits to restart, especially now that the Wheel Online Redesign team is fully underway, as is my role in heading the PR department for my marketing class. But everyone has their vices, right?

You asked for it

January 13th, 2007

I’ve never had a visitor-geared content on any of my pages. I tried doing it with the 7th version of the collective (before I closed down the whole thing), but I ended up making a very pretty layout for it that was obnoxious to edit so I never ended up doing much. Anyway, my point is, I finally added some content! There’s a new item on the navigation menu to the left, VISITOR.

Available for download is the script to implement a bookshelf of your very own. It’s not a very advanced script as it is my first, but I thought I’d make it available in case anyone was interested. I’m also working on a tutorial on how to make wordpress plugins. I’ve only got the first paragraph right now, but I need to first find a plug-in that will let me display programming code on wordpress pages, and then I’ll be able to keep working on it. Wish me luck!
